The four pricing models

  1. Per minute (live). You buy a bundle of receptionist minutes. PATLive: $99/mo for 50 minutes, or $2.99 a minute pay-as-you-go. Ruby: $250/mo for 50 minutes.
  2. Per call. You pay for each answered call regardless of length. Smith.ai: $300/mo for 30 calls, $11.50 each after. Upfirst (AI): $24.95/mo for 30 calls, $1.50 each after.
  3. Blended minutes. Abby Connect: $164/mo for 50 “Abby Minutes”, where an AI minute counts as half a human minute.
  4. AI minutes. Rosie: $49/mo for 250 minutes. Frontdesk: $99/mo for 200 minutes.

How to keep the bill down

  • Overflow or after-hours only. Only send calls you cannot answer. Several services offer this mode.
  • Use AI for routine calls. Let AI handle FAQs and bookings and transfer the rest to a person (hybrid).
  • Filter spam. Robocalls burn minutes. Dialzara and Phonely list spam screening.
  • Annual billing. Discounts exist (Upfirst $20/mo annual vs $24.95 monthly; Frontdesk $79 vs $99), but only commit once you have tested it.

FAQ

What is the average cost of an answering service?

We do not publish an 'average' because plans are not like-for-like. From published entry plans on 29 Oct 2026: live services were $2.99 a minute (PATLive pay-as-you-go), $99 for 50 minutes (PATLive) and $250 for 50 minutes (Ruby); hybrid Smith.ai was $300 for 30 calls; AI receptionists were $24.95-$99 a month.

Why do answering services charge per minute?

Live services pay staff by the hour, so they bill receptionist time. Check whether time is rounded up per call and whether hold or transfer time counts, as this changes the real price.

Is a cheaper per-call price better?

Only if your calls are long. Smith.ai charged $11.50 per extra call; at 5-minute calls that is $2.30 a minute, cheaper than per-minute services. At 1-minute calls it is much dearer.

Do answering services charge set-up fees?

Some do, many do not. None of the entry plans we checked showed a set-up fee on the pricing page, but ask before you sign and read the contract terms.
