Short answerLaw firms mostly need two things from an answering service: consistent intake of new matters and a fast hand-off of urgent calls. Smith.ai (from $300/mo, Clio integration, lead intake), Ruby (from $250/mo, live receptionists, 24/7 Spanish) and PATLive (from $99/mo, Clio listed, bilingual) are the human or hybrid options we checked. Upfirst (from $24.95/mo, Clio Manage integration) is the low-cost AI option for overflow and after-hours calls.

What a law firm needs from call answering

  1. Intake that captures the right facts: name, contact details, matter type, opposing party (for conflict checks), urgency, how they heard of you.
  2. Rules for urgent calls: arrests, court deadlines, existing clients. These should reach a lawyer fast.
  3. No legal advice. The receptionist must never answer legal questions.
  4. Records in your practice management system, so intake does not get retyped.
  5. Bilingual cover if your clients need it.

The options

Smith.ai: hybrid intake with Clio

From $300/mo for 30 calls ($11.50 per extra call). AI-first, hybrid or human-first handling, US-based agents, lead screening and intake, Spanish line (+$1 per call), call recording. Integrations include Clio, HubSpot, Salesforce and Zapier. Legal is one of its main markets. Full Smith.ai review.

Ruby: all-human, per minute

From $250/mo for 50 receptionist minutes. Live receptionists 24/7, 24/7 Spanish/bilingual, optional scheduling. Legal is listed among Ruby’s core markets. Smith.ai vs Ruby.

PATLive: lowest-cost live option

From $99/mo for 50 minutes or $2.99 a minute pay-as-you-go, 14-day trial. US-based receptionists, screening and transfer, bilingual included, no AI. Lists Clio among its integrations.

Abby Connect: human and AI on one call

From $164/mo for 50 “Abby Minutes” (AI minutes count half). English and Spanish.

Upfirst: AI for overflow and after hours

From $24.95/mo for 30 calls, 14-day trial without a card. Lists Clio Manage integration, warm transfer and overflow or after-hours modes. Law firms are one of the markets it names. A sensible way to stop missed calls at night without paying human rates.

Quo: if you also need a new phone system

Business phone from $19 per user per month, with the Sona AI agent (10 calls included; packs from $25/mo). Lists Clio integration.

A practical set-up for a small firm

  • Business hours: your own staff answer; overflow goes to a hybrid or live service.
  • After hours and weekends: AI takes details and books a call-back; anything flagged urgent transfers to an on-call mobile.
  • Every call creates a record in Clio (or your PMS) automatically.

Several services focus only on law firms (for example Answering Legal and LEX Reception rank well for these searches). We have not checked their pricing yet; this page will be updated when we do.

FAQ

Should a law firm use an AI receptionist?

For overflow, after-hours and basic message-taking, AI can work and costs far less. For new-client intake, conflict checks and distressed callers, most firms prefer a person, or a hybrid service where AI answers and a human takes over. Never let any service give legal advice.

Which answering services integrate with Clio?

Of the services we checked on 29 Oct 2026, Smith.ai, PATLive, Quo and Upfirst list Clio (Upfirst lists Clio Manage). Check the depth of the integration: creating a contact, a matter or just a note.

How much does a legal answering service cost?

Entry plans on 29 Oct 2026: PATLive $99/mo for 50 minutes; Ruby $250/mo for 50 minutes; Smith.ai $300/mo for 30 calls; Abby Connect $164/mo for 50 blended minutes; Upfirst (AI) $24.95/mo for 30 calls.

Can an answering service handle Spanish-speaking clients?

Yes. Ruby lists 24/7 Spanish/bilingual cover, PATLive includes bilingual service, Smith.ai has a Spanish line at +$1 per call, and Abby Connect lists English and Spanish.
